Supporting and promoting local high school athletics, the Triangle’s leading sports-talk radio stations kick-off season long coverage of high school football with mega match-up, Millbrook at Garner

Raleigh, N.C. – August 4, 2008 –  The Triangle’s top sports-talk radio stations, 620 The Bull – ESPN Radio (WDNC) and 850 The Buzz (WRBZ), announced today that they will begin broadcasting the Friday Night Football Game of the Week, offering Triangle sports fans live, play-by-play coverage of football games from various local high schools.

Each Friday, a local football match-up will be featured on one of the stations, bringing a much needed spotlight and support to Triangle high school athletes.  The inaugural game will air on Sports Radio 850 The Buzz on Friday, August 22nd at 7pm when Millbrook High School plays at Garner High School .

“Our stations have always pledged to cover local sports and our coverage of high school football is a big part of that plan,” commented WRBZ/WDNC General Manager Brian Maloney.  “We are thrilled with the response we are receiving from coaches, players, parents and local businesses that will be a part of the broadcasts through their sponsorship,” Maloney added.

Increasing media promotion of high school athletics and positive news, 850 The Buzz and 620 The Bull will be the only stations in the area to broadcast live coverage of high school football. The new Friday Night High School Football Game of the Week program will allow those who are unable to attend the game, the opportunity to still listen in and cheer on their team. Also showing support for high school football programs, Capital Bank has signed on to be the presenting sponsor of the weekly match-up.

Capital Bank’s President and Chief Executive Officer B. Grant Yarber stated – “Capital Bank is committed to the success of our local high school football teams and heralds the achievements of our student athletes.  Helping our young people realize their full potential empowers them as it strengthens our communities."

Play by play duties will be handled by Drew Smith and/or Brad Heller.  Drew Smith has more than 20 years broadcasting experience and is most familiar to Triangle sports fans for his 13 years as WTVD’s primary sports anchor.  Mr. Smith has covered 12 Final Fours, two Super Bowls and won two Emmy awards for “Friday Night Football”, in 1999 and 2000 while at WTVD.  Brad Heller currently serves as anchor and play-by-play announcer for the Tar Heel Sports Network, covering University of North Carolina Women ’s Basketball.

620 The Bull and/or 850 The Buzz will air a different high school football game each Friday night, through the playoffs and into the State Championship on December 6, 2008. The first game will feature Millbrook at Garner, Friday, August 22nd airing on WRBZ-850 The Buzz at 7pm.  Additional games/schedule will be announced soon.
